Taxonomy of Ideas

This section highlights selected personal works across the design spectrum that have been essential to developing my design language. Indeed a glimpse of perspective is offered in order to illuminate the myriad of ways my creativity manifests.

Perfect Lovers

Exhibition Poster & Collateral

One of my favorite ways to spend my time is finding and collecting bits and pieces of writing from various sources including books, blogs, articles, etc. This particular piece of writing was selected from a block on the website Are.na. “Perfect Lovers” is the title of an artwork by Félix González-Torres that functioned as a commentary of the temporality of love. There are 4 editions of this work, one of which is located in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Additionally I designed a t-shirt and tote bag to round out this collection.

U.S. vs. New Zealand (2024)

Sport Poster & Collateral

Recently, as many people in my family love to play and watch soccer, I was hooked on the 2024 summer olympics which took place in Paris. As I was following team USA, one of the games early on in the group stage that I was excited about watching was against New Zealand. In anticipation of the match I designed a promotional poster inspired by vintage sports posters with solid typography and a dynamic hero image. Additionally I designed an alt version using large type alluding to bold sports branding. Lastly, I designed a hand drawn lockup for the 2024 Paris Olympics that could flex as a promotional t-shirt design.

Scrap Yards Are the Last Frontier For New Ideas

Poster Design

I’ve been fascinated for a while now with how the process of upcycling can create value from seemingly used or worn parts. To reconstitute something that may have an even greater value than when first produced is interesting and something I find myself coming back to whether through my work or the physical goods I wear. This poster uses the metaphor of a scrapyard to make the case that sometimes our most powerful innovations, ideas, products, come from looking at the past; the scraps of our ingenuity indeed can hold the light of our future.

Octopus’s Garden

Concert Poster

Having been on a nostalgia kick recently, I was inspired to make a concert poster for one of my favorite singles by The Beatles off Abbey Road, “Octopus’s Garden”. In this design I wanted to emphasize being underwater, to accomplish this I used a composition where I placed an octopus on the bottom of the poster with a liquid effect on the typography. Afterwards I printed and scanned in the poster to photoshop to adjust the color and grain quality for that vintage feel.

Cuckoo

Film Poster

I’m a huge fan of horror movies and every now and then I like to design my own take on a film poster. This one was for the movie Cuckoo which released on August 2024. For this design I focused the composition around the eyes of the protagonist since I felt they contrasted well with the eyes of the creature from the movie. I dropped in the tag line from the movie right below the title for good measure and typeset the actor/director info in a standard format towards the bottom. Once I printed and scanned this poster, I created a GIF to emphasize the blaring and hypnotic audio that is a central motif of the Cuckoo creature in the movie.
